Global Hospitals to host training workshop on minimally invasive heart surgery for cardiac surgeons

HYDERABAD: Around 150 cardiac surgeons from different parts of the country would be participating in a workshop on ‘Minimal Access Cardiac Surgery' organized by Global Hospitals here on Saturday.

The workshop would provide a unique platform for cardiac surgeons to exchange and share their experiences in the rapidly evolving area of cardiac surgery.

Live demonstrations

The daylong workshop also includes live case demonstrations, chief cardiothoracic and heart transplant surgeon A.G.K. Gokhale told reporters here on Friday.

For the procedure, a small incision of about seven cms is made on the side of the chest that goes between ribs and not breaking any bone.

This brings down the recovery time to three to four weeks instead of the usual three to four months required after a regular surgery.

The infection and blood transfusion rate too come down with this while ensuring better cosmetic results, he said.

Given the benefits, these non-sternotomy surgeries would get more popular and have more surgeons in the country adopting them, Dr. Gokhale hoped.

Global Hospitals Group CMD Dr. K. Ravindranath said the new initiative would certainly help those suffering from heart problems.

Moreover, minimally invasive cardiac surgery is patient-friendly, he says.
